PRECISEU Best Practice Recognition, Edition 3

Have you found the solution?

Progress has been made in bringing ATMPs and novel therapies to market, but challenges remain. What are the main obstacles today? PRECISEU has conducted surveys and analyses across its partner regions to identify where these barriers persist.

The challenges can be grouped into four categories:

  • High costs and limited infrastructure: Costs remain high, and access to specialized infrastructure is limited.
  • Regulatory burden: Project developers face regulatory challenges that can hinder the development and market entry of ATMPs and novel therapies.
  • Data management and access: Ensuring safe and sustainable data management and access remains a key challenge.
  • Education and trust: Education is essential to fostering a culture of trust in novel tools, particularly when it comes to the adoption of AI.

We are now looking for solutions to address these challenges. These may include technical innovations, infrastructure, training tools, or other approaches. Applications are welcome from institutions, start-ups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Our goal is to showcase and share best practices, giving successful solutions a platform to inspire others and encourage their adoption across Europe.

What challenge have you tackled, and how did you solve it?

Svitlana Surodina, OPORA Health, states:

“Receiving the PRECISEU Best Practice Recognition for Innovation in 2025 was an important step in expanding OPORA Health’s European network. The connections made through the award and community meeting helped us build new relationships and, for example, led to a new collaboration through BRAINFRAME, a five-year Horizon Europe project headed by Vilnius University and focused on advancing brain health research across Europe.

Within BRAINFRAME, OPORA Health will contribute practical governance infrastructure for responsible Health AI.

It gives us the opportunity to test these approaches across a multi-site European research consortium and develop a reusable model for wider collaboration.”

Dr. Joaquim Vives, Banc de Sang i Teixits

For Dr. Joaquim Vives, Raquel Cabrera Pérez and the team at Banc de Sang i Teixits, the PRECISEU Best Practice Recognition is not only about visibility, it is also about becoming part of a network where complementary expertise can connect and grow.

Today, Dr. Vives chairs BTCs4ATMP, a COST action, bringing together blood, tissue and cell establishments, researchers, clinicians, manufacturers, regulators, biobanks and ethics experts from across Europe. Through PRECISEU, Suraj Lachmandas had the opportunity to meet Dr. Joaquim Vives, a fellow awardee, who now has joined the project.

Their shared ambition: to tackle some of the key challenges around the development, manufacturing and accessibility of ATMPs.

Best Practice Recognition can help outstanding initiatives become more visible, but its value goes further when recognised innovators meet others working on different parts of the same challenge.

Suraj Lachmandas, MiMIAT Health

Suraj Lachmandas, Founder & CEO of MiMIAT Health, joined the exclusive event EP PerMed CONNECT, designed to bring together European projects and initiatives working towards the advancement of personalised medicine for the benefit of patients and citizens. As EP PerMed put it: “EP PerMed is delighted to continue building bridges with other European projects and initiatives that share a similar ambition: advancing personalised medicine in Europe for the benefit of patients and citizens.”

The event reinforced an important message: personalised medicine must go beyond patient-centred language and create systems where patients have a stronger role in how data, therapies and care pathways are shaped. Europe has the opportunity to build more decentralised models, where data sovereignty and continuity of care move closer to the individual, and where patients are not only consulted, but actively involved in shaping the systems built around their lives.

This is also what the PRECISEU Best Practice Recognition aims to support: giving strong practices greater visibility, creating meaningful connections and helping recognised teams become part of wider European conversations.
