PRECISEU featured in Drug Discovery and Development

20/05/2026

PRECISEU has been featured in the latest edition of Drug Discovery and Development, with the article “Accelerating personalised medicine in Europe: translating innovation into real-world impact for patients”.

The article presents PRECISEU as a European initiative working to connect regional innovation ecosystems and support the implementation of personalised medicine across Europe. It highlights the need to move from scientific progress to practical adoption, so that advances in health data, targeted therapies and advanced therapy medicinal products can generate real-world impact for patients.

Personalised medicine is reshaping how diseases are understood, diagnosed and treated. However, implementation across Europe remains uneven, often affected by fragmented innovation ecosystems, limited mechanisms for scaling solutions, data interoperability challenges, regulatory complexity and uneven access to advanced healthcare innovation.

In this context, PRECISEU contributes by supporting collaboration across regions and stakeholders, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, experience and practices related to personalised medicine implementation.

The article also reflects on several areas central to PRECISEU’s work:

  • the role of health data in supporting diagnosis, patient stratification, clinical outcomes analysis and healthcare resource use;
  • the need for better governance, ethical and regulatory frameworks for the responsible use of health data;
  • the complexity of implementing advanced therapies, including ATMPs;
  • the role of best practice recognition in identifying transferable examples across regions;
  • the importance of inter-regional collaboration in building more connected innovation ecosystems;
  • the growing role of patients as partners in healthcare innovation.

A key message of the article is that personalised medicine cannot be implemented by one actor alone. It requires coordination across science, healthcare, industry, policy and society, as well as stronger connections between European regions.

Through PRECISEU, partners across Europe are working to reduce fragmentation, support knowledge exchange and create the conditions for personalised medicine to move from promise to practice.

The article is available in: Drug Discovery and Development, June–September 2026, pages 138–141.
